The Bueno-Woolworths Partnership: Revolutionising Refrigeration Management
We recently shared the news that Bueno had won this year’s Digie Award for “Most Intelligent Retail” at Realcomm 2024 for our innovative work with Woolworths. We’re excited to highlight a video testimonial from Brendan Meller, Data & Insights Manager at Woolworths Facilities Management, where he discusses our successful partnership and the impact of our advanced analytics on refrigeration management.
Understanding the Ice-Up Challenge
In grocery stores, refrigeration ice-ups can be a significant issue, leading to inefficiencies, stock loss, and operational challenges. Ice build-up within refrigeration cases affects their performance, causing high-temperature alarms and urgent repair jobs, which are categorised as P1 or P2 priorities (the highest urgency levels). These alarms often occur after hours, requiring technicians to respond immediately, leading to increased costs and disruptions.
Bueno’s Predictive Analytics Solution
Brendan explains that through our collaboration, we’ve developed a world-leading predictive analytics system capable of forecasting refrigeration ice-ups 5 to 7 days in advance with 95% accuracy. This predictive capability allows Woolworths to schedule maintenance during regular hours, significantly reducing after-hours callouts and improving overall operational efficiency.
Our solution integrates data from building management systems (BMS) across Woolworths’ extensive network of stores into their Energy Management Centre (EMC). By identifying critical data points and developing sophisticated analytics, we’ve enabled Woolworths to proactively manage their refrigeration systems, preventing ice-ups before they occur.
Benefits and Future Plans
The implementation of Bueno’s analytics has yielded substantial benefits, including:
- Cost Reduction: By shifting urgent after-hours jobs to planned maintenance during regular hours, Woolworths has achieved significant cost savings.
- Operational Efficiency: Predictive maintenance reduces emergency callouts, enhances uptime, and prevents stock loss, ensuring a seamless customer experience.
- Scalability: This technology, currently applied to refrigeration systems, is set to expand to other assets within Woolworths’ operations, further enhancing their maintenance strategies.
The future for Grocery Analytics
Brendan envisions a future where the Bueno-Woolworths partnership continues to lead the way in predictive maintenance and smart asset management. With the current success in refrigeration systems, the next phase involves expanding the predictive analytics to other critical assets across Woolworths’ operations. The Smart Asset Monitoring (SAM) initiative aims to identify and prioritise additional assets for connectivity and data analysis, enhancing the overall maintenance strategy. Brendan highlights the goal of integrating more assets into the predictive maintenance framework, further optimising operational efficiency and driving sustainability efforts. This ongoing collaboration promises to deliver continuous improvements and set new benchmarks in the retail industry.
